- Types of Promises
- Tone Promise
- example: Opening scene is something tragic to start off a wacky comedy
- The cold open: jumping into a mini story that mirrors the overall story (think the beginning of any Indiana Jones)
- The Prologue has become a bit cliché
- You can set tone with:
- The words you use
- How you open the story
- Character Arc
- You don’t have to promise what the arc will be
- What does the character not have and what are the obstacles preventing them from getting it.
- Some sort of need, desire, something lacking, etc.
- iconic characters may not have an arc
- Plot Promise
- Give the reader a promise of what kind of story their getting into
